Berkeley is one of the few cities in California with rent control and eviction control ordinances. These ordinances apply to most multi-family properties except in a few special cases.
- Properties built after June 1980 are exempt from rent and eviction control
- Duplexes that were owner-occupied on December 31st 1979 and are currently owner occupied are exempt from rent and eviction control
